One Day Project- Matt

For Matt's brief we were to think about the idea of typography and how we can relate it to valentines day. It was important to think outside of just simple typogaphy and therefore i began my idea generating process.

Sketches and inital ideas

Below shows the photo os my sketchbook page taken as part of the my initial ideas. On here i really thought about the actual words i am communicating as well as the unique composition that i could play with. It was important for myself to go through this process as i really wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone. Some of my favourites from my sketchbook page include the claw machine, i really liked this idea and i would love to develop this as a full coloured illustration, however, i felt it wasn't strong enough within the typography and therefore i decided to go with the match stick idea.

final design

Below shows my final ideas for the perfect match. I decided to create it into a two part illustration both with very different feelings and emotions. In the left side illustration i wanted to show a valentines from a happy point fo view someone who is in a happy healthy relationship. I did this through the light hearted pink tones colours which reflect the idea o love and valentines. As for the typography i used the matches from the match boc to create the typography following on the pun.

However, in the second image it changes it and the emotion becomes very different. The composition stays the same toe keep that connection however the elements have changed to create that sense of heartbreak and breakdown within the relationship. I decided to add a lot darker colours to represent that as well as breaking some of the elements such as the ripped polaroid's and the dying rose linking back to the death of the relationship.

As for the typography i wanted to show the matches set on fire, with some elements missing to show that breakdown of the idea and the partnership. I feel this looks really effective and allowed me to really play around with typography to create a message and really tell a narrative and takeaway from that traditional love filled valentines message.

Overall, i am really happy with how this looked. It was really hard for me to playing around with those darker toned colours and a more negative narrative as this is something i do not like to stick to within my work. However, i am happy with how it tuned out, i like the sense of story that was brought in with the two side by side panels. It also felt really nice to push myself out of my comfort one within the concept. If  was to push myself further i think i would make it even darker maybe change it to more blue tones to create that sense of sorrow.
