Research into sustainable packaging

With wastage becoming a dangerous issue within our modern day life as we face issues such as climate change and plastic pollution, I feel it is is important to look into sustainable options which can help us move forward in a positive direction therefore I have done some research for my product with some great examples below.

Compostable Packaging

Whilst doing some research into sustainable packaging, one material that kept appearing was compostable packaging. This material as seen in this picture above from the supplier noissue, the idea of the bags is for them to be planted with no toxic residue allowing them to simply breakdown within the soil. I feel this is a great option for postal packaging and other options as it is a great alternative for plastic.

Recycled Packaging

Also within the article in which I referenced above I found another great alternative for single use plastic was the recycled mailers as pictured above. These materials are made from recycled plastic and gives a second life to the materials. These are great as it limits waste within landfill and also lowers natural resources as it is already using past materials, therefore there is no need for sourcing more.

Corrugated Packaging

Corrugated Packaging is a sustainable packaging that is becoming more and more popular within the industry, simply acting like cardboard, corrugated packaging has a similar look and feel however made from trees and old corrugated containers that then can be reused 7 to 10 times to make new packaging. With corrugated packaging being recovered within cycling more than any other material it shows how useful this product really is within the industry.

Kraft Paper

Kraft paper is a more sustainable option then even the normal paper, this is because Kraft paper is made from wood pulp and made from a mixture of different woods that can all be recycled therefore making it more sustainable then the typical material, i like the overall look of kraft paper it nice that it has that thickness that could be used for packaging yet could be printed on due to its smooth surface.

Overall i found it really helpful to look over some examples of sustainable materials that i could consider within my own packaging which i am hoping to develop. This research was mainly found from a great article from packaging noissue that shows example of their sustainable options within their package choices.
