(Penguin Book Cover Competition) Developed Thumbnails
After producing some initial thumbnails and looking at different typography experiments I decided to develop my designs further creating bigger more detailed drawings. This therefore allowed me to develop my drawings and experiment with different compositions.
The first idea was the leaf frame with the typography sitting bold in the middle. I liked this idea as it had the focus on being on the hand drawn typography, something which I really wanted to focus on when thinking about designing my cover. I liked how the leaves framed and almost created a circular shape as it almost gave that impression of nature being all around us and the importance it has. I feel there is definitely a great possibility for this to develop further and therefore this is one i will develop further possibly looking at colour.
The second idea also followed the leaf theme and had more of a loose composition with flying leaves
that also act as a frame for the centre title and authors name. I do like this idea however, I feel it doesn't particularly work and not fitting with the vibe that I am going with.
The third idea was an original idea that I was officially drawn to. I liked the idea of the unique composition looking amongst the trees. The idea was as though you would look up towards the sky peaking amongst the branches. I liked this idea as it created that feeling of how big nature really is and its importance. i liked how the drawing developed and feel it has the possibility to develop further with colour.
The fourth design also had the theme of trees and instead worked from an eye height level, and using the tree as a framing tool that sits to the right of the page, I added to this by finishing with a landscape inspired by the places the author speaks about within the book. I do like this idea however, I feel its rather generic and doesn't really push the ideas.
The final developed sketch I included followed the theme of birds as this is a key theme and something the author speaks about often with bird watching being a key interest for the family. I liked the ideas of the birds and the text floating within the trail of wind left behind. I do like this idea but I don't know how effective it would be in terms of final composition.
Moving forward I will think about moving forward and adding details such and colour and finalised typography and layout.
