(Penguin Book Cover Competition) Developed book Covers with colours
After playing around with developed sketches it was only right to move forward begin adding colour and detail. Below shows my first developed drawing and also one of my favourites. I chose to go for a darker tone theme that would contrast with he lighter typography and bright leaves. This is something unusual for me and therefore, i wanted to push this idea and take it in a different direction from the other two below.
I particular like the mint green tone of the writing and the abstract shame that will be used to frame the blurb. I think i really stands out against the navy and takes it that bit further than the typical white colour that we almost expect to see. As for the colours of the leaves i chose a range with some being more autumnal toned and some greens for spring/summer. I chose to do this as within the plot of the book the author discusses nature throughout the different season and therefore i thought it would be nice to include this.
Moving forward with this book cover i felt there is a couple of elements that need adjusting such as the brightness of the page in the corner, i like its placement but feel the colour is too bright and therefore draws the eyes up towards that corner instead of the middle for the typography. I also feel it might be nice tro see how i could develop the blurb adding the text to see how that would sit against the abstract shape.

For the second book seen below, i chose to develop the idea of looking up amongst the trees. I liked the idea however i feel since adding the colour it has lo0st some charm for me personally. I feel the colour appears a bit too wish washy and doesn't look as professional as the first cover. I do however like the pattern on the park and feel pattern is an important element for myself to include as not only is it something I enjoy but I also feel it suits my style. I also really like and enjoyed the experimenting of adding the text going up the bark and following the shape of the tree. I feel this was very different for me and something that i did feel worked for this piece.
The third illustration was developed f4rom the landscape design in which the tree sat to the left. OI liked the idea of creating ad environment and landscape however felt the composition was too basic and needed changing to just add that something else. Therefore i played around with creating more of a forest environment adding more trees and playing around with the foreground and background. I do like this idea and feel it does work in some ways, yet i feel i am not pushing myself, whilst the colours feel to dull and not standing out.
From reviewing my coloured developments it was obvious the first design was by far my favourite duien to its bold typography and fun colour contrasts. Therefore moving forward i intend to develop this further taking it closer towards finalising the design.
