(Penguin Book Cover Competition) Artist Research- Sara Mulvanny

Sara Mulvanny is a British illustrator based in Surrey, her words has been used on a wide range of project such as books, editorial and larger scale such as products for companies like museums and restaurants. She graduated from Kingston university with a degree in Illustration. From her website i was able to find out that Sara Mulvanny likes to work in pen and ink drawings using them to create pattern and texture.

Mulvanny was another artist i found whilst looking for inspiration on Pinterest, i like Cher use of bright colours and fun shape and textures. I particularly found this first drawing below, which seem to be a cover for a non-fiction book. This illustration stood out to me as i loved the use of typography against the unique style of illustration. I feel it is done rather successfully and should be an inspiration for my own work.

Another great example of Mulvanny work was this one seen below, from the composition I feel like this was designed for a book cover with the trees sitting either side as though it is a framing tool within the composition to help draw the reader into the title. I also particularly loved the colour palette that the illustrator uses and feel it is so bright and colour, I also like how the illustrator uses the darker navy instead of the darker tone browns and black to create a softer feel. I feel this is really successful and definitely creates a feel for the book.

Below shows a third illustration i found from Mulvanny's website in which she creates a vignette style illustration in which is very different from the two examples above. I really like this a the limited tones in which she uses, As although she uses colder toned blues it still feels quite homely. I also like from just this smaller image she is telling a narrative from the dog to the front to the shape of the tree and smoke coming out the house creating this impression of movement.

Overall I really like Mulvanny's work and feel it will be a great inspiration to my own from her use of composition and t her strong skill within typography.
